These numbers count single-family homes only. Condos, townhouses and attached homes are left out. They are the single-family homes that closed in Bay Farm Island, from the MLS. A neighborhood this size can swing from one quarter to the next on a handful of sales, so these show where the market has been, not what your home will sell for. When doing neighborhood stats, it is imperative to use the correct boundaries, as overlapping into adjacent neighborhoods may skew results. Living in Bay Farm Island

What it is like on the ground in Bay Farm Island: getting around, errands, nature and schools, from Local Logic.

Why is it called Bay Farm Island?

The name comes from its farming past. Before the 20th century, the island was farmland, and asparagus was the main crop, so it was also known as Asparagus Island. The surrounding waters held large oyster beds that supplied restaurants in San Francisco. Marshes around the island were later filled, and much of what is built there today stands on reclaimed land.

What is the story of the Bay Farm Island Bridge?

The first bridge here went up in 1854 as a wooden toll trestle surfaced with crushed oyster shells. It was abandoned and rotted, the county built another in 1875, and several replacements followed, and the present drawbridge opened in 1953. A separate bridge just for people on foot and on bikes was added alongside it in the 1990s, which makes the trip to the main island an easy ride.

What is Harbor Bay?

Harbor Bay Isle is the largest development on Bay Farm Island, generally bounded by Island Drive and Mecartney Road. It is organized into seven villages: six residential villages that together hold about twenty homeowners associations, and one village for the Harbor Bay business park. A few areas on the island sit outside it, including three townhome developments on the south end (Islandia, Casitas, and Garden Isle) and the single-family homes east of Island Drive.

What is there to do on Bay Farm Island?

The shoreline is the draw. A greenbelt path runs around the island's edge, with Shoreline Park along the water and a chain of lagoons on the island. Bay Farm Island also has several community parks and its own branch of the Alameda Free Library.

What is Corica Park?

Corica Park is Alameda's city-owned golf complex on Bay Farm Island. The golf course was established in 1925 and opened in 1927. Today it includes the 18-hole South Course, a nine-hole short course, and the front nine of a new North Course, along with a driving range, practice areas, a restaurant, and a pavilion. It is open to the public.

What kind of homes are on Bay Farm Island?

Bay Farm Island was farmland before its 20th-century development, and its homes date from that later growth. Harbor Bay's villages are planned residential subdivisions, and townhome developments and single-family streets fill in the rest of the island.

What should you look for in a Bay Farm Island home? With about twenty homeowners associations in Harbor Bay alone, read the association documents closely before you commit: the rules, the budget, and what the dues cover. Newer homes still deserve a careful inspection. As with any Alameda home, check whether it is in FEMA's Special Flood Hazard Area on FEMA's official flood map (the City's Community View map gives an unofficial view). If it is, and your lender is federally regulated or insured, flood insurance is required.

Coastline Christian Schools, a private school for kindergarten through grade 8, is on North Loop Road. For middle and high school, the closest are Lincoln Middle School and Alameda High School on the main island. All of Alameda's public schools are part of the Alameda Unified School District. Alameda is part of the East Bay regional private sewer lateral program, so a sale needs a compliance certificate or a time extension certificate from EBMUD before escrow closes. Who takes that on is negotiable between the seller and the buyer. My Alameda home selling page explains the rest.

Why do homeowners sell on Bay Farm Island?

Homeowners move on for all kinds of reasons including (but not limited to): upsizing to a second or third home, divorce, relocating for work, or the passing of a family member.
