Maybe there are health challenges. Maybe they live too far. Maybe there is a reverse mortgage. Maybe there’s stairs that are difficult to navigate now. Maybe the upkeep and maintenance has REALLY fallen far behind. There can be lots of reasons, and it can also be a combination of them. Even if the financials are still doable, that’s often not enough to justify the status quo… deferred maintenance adds up and it adds up faster and faster as time passes. That means the house might be losing more value than whatever the carrying costs are.

So what do you do? You need to know what’s going on with the house, and understand the extent of any repairs before moving forward. The biggest issues are usually not visible to an untrained eye. Then get it sold for what it’s actually worth, not what your memories say it’s worth.
