So what do I mean by, “Home you hated?” You probably recognize the term “fixer-upper”. It’s a house that needs a little work or maybe some updating, but has “good bones” and no major issues. Since move-in ready homes can be very hard to find and super competitive, especially if you’re on a budget . . . you need to broaden your perspective. Fixer-uppers can be a really great option if you’re looking to break into the housing market or want to stretch your budget further. According to NerdWallet: “Buying a fixer-upper can provide a path to homeownership for first-time home buyers or a way for repeat buyers to afford a larger home or a better neighborhood.”
Here’s a useful tip that can help you strategically narrow down your home search. First, make a list of all the features you want in a home. Once your list is written down, sort it into these categories:
Must-Haves – These are the basic features that a house MUST HAVE in order to be a good fit for you, your family, or lifestyle. Number of bedrooms, bathrooms, are there stairs? Nice-To-Haves – These are the features you’d love to have but it’s not a deal-breaker if the house doesn’t have it. Dream-To-Haves! – This is your dream feature list! These are NOT features that you need to be a good fit, but hey, if it’s in your budget, and it has all the Must-Haves, a lot of nice-to-haves, and one or some of these Dream Features… then you have definitely found a winner!
Once you sort your list, share it with me! I know the biggest issue with a fixer-upper is making sure that the level of work the home needs matches what you, your family, and your pocketbook can handle. So, we’ll dig into the inspections together and I’ll help you figure out if the house’s condition is acceptable and appropriate for you.
